As the fall season unfolds, the Solomon School District is thrilled to announce the upcoming induction ceremony for the 2024 Gorilla Hall of Fame, set to take place during the first home football game on Friday, September 13th. For the third consecutive year, the district will recognize outstanding individuals who have significantly impacted the school and community. The evening will begin with a Gorilla Backyard BBQ on Williams Street, hosted by the high school Student Council, at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. kickoff against Wakefield.
This year’s Hall of Fame induction will honor several distinguished members whose dedication and contributions have left an enduring legacy within the Solomon community.
To start, we celebrate Darrell Dwayne Ames, Class of 1974, whose commitment to service extended far beyond his 20 years in the U.S. Navy. His long tenure as a sports official, successful career as a news and sportscaster, and ongoing roles in teaching Sunday school and serving on the Pan Am 103 Survivor Committee showcases his profound impact across various communities.
Next, we honor Richard Carlson, Class of 1967, whose extensive involvement in the Solomon community is remarkable. Serving as a funeral director for 40 years and contributing to numerous civic organizations, including the Solomon Housing Authority and Alumni Scholarship Committee, Richard’s dedication is evident in his lifelong commitment to local service.
Ray Eisenhauer, a 1951 Solomon graduate, also exemplifies a lifetime of service. After his time in the U.S. Army, Ray returned to Solomon and made significant contributions as a lineman at D.S.&O. His roles on the Recreation Committee, Lions Club, and Boy Scouts, along with his support of local sports, reflect a deep-rooted commitment to his hometown.
Garold and Rita Homman, graduates of 1958 and 1959, were foundational figures in the Solomon community. Garold’s leadership as Chief of the Fire Department and City Councilman, combined with Rita’s dedication as a Drill Team Sponsor and uniform maker, cement their legacy. Their home was a sanctuary for students, and their active involvement in local organizations continues to be remembered through their family’s ongoing connection to Solomon.
In education, Harry George Phillips Jr., dedicated 34 years to the Solomon district as a guidance counselor, coach, and mentor. His work extended beyond the classroom, where he played a pivotal role in guiding students toward success, including leading the Quiz Bowl team to state qualification and co-sponsoring the National Honor Society.
Finally, Lawrence Strouts is celebrated for his 34 years as a math and science teacher at Solomon High School. His innovative teaching methods and service as a community leader, including roles on the City Council and as an elder in his church, underscore his commitment to both education and community. His legacy is further honored by his family’s achievements and their recognition as K-State’s Family of the Year in 2008.
Each inductee will be honored with a commemorative plaque, displayed in the school's Hall of Fame. The Solomon School District extends its heartfelt congratulations to the 2024 inductees and invites the entire community to join in the celebration at the football game this Friday night.
